DeMelo's Da News

Boo Bashing

November, Movember Already!

Did you notice more moustaches on the faces of the people around you?

What is Movember, you may ask?

Movember (the month formerly known as November) is a moustache growing charity event held during November each year that raises funds and awareness for men's health issues such as prostate and testicular cancer. MovemberWestJet, among others, decided to participate. They put mustaches on their airplanes. .

We also hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving and Remembrance Day with their family this month. However you decided to celebrate, we do hope you reaffirmed your family connections.

Grey Cup Games

Were you glued to the TV for the Canadian Football League's 100th Grey Cup game? Al and the guys traveled to Toronto to Rogers Centre for their annual "Guy's Trip". They said they had a great time, and I suspect that is so as they were so tired when they arrived home. Oh.. the winner was..... (drumroll please).

The Argonauts defeated the Stampeders 35–22 to win their sixteenth Grey Cup title.

Al's team (the BC Lions) did not make it this year, but he was rooting for the Stampeders from Calgary, so he was a little disappointed in the games outcome, but had a great time nonetheless.

An Evening with Cesar Millan!

Cesar Millan, (The Dog Whisperer) was here on tour in Kamloops. His tour, aptly named "Trust Your Instincts" was a great transfer of information on how to live in harmony with man's best friend. Some of the important teachings were:

As a result of this seminar, we have been working on changing some of our dogs behavior.

For instance, by making sure the dogs are calm before they get fed or go for a walk reinforces the calm, submissive state. We learned if we start to go for a walk when they are in an excited state we are rewarding the behavior we don't like. If we wait for them to be in a calm, submissive state we have a better experience. This way they know that being calm gets them a reward. In general, we never want our dogs to fear us-- we want them to respect us and look to us for guidance.

Consider the example of when a dog jumps up on someone. Often we will pet them and say nice things, providing them with attention. This is a reward for the excited behavior. If we ignore the dog, just let the dog sniff, wait for his behavior to calm down and he is simply standing on all fours, then pet and give attention to them, the dog will learn that he is rewarded for that behavior.

The bottom line is we learned that in managing our pooches, our energy highly affects how our dogs behave. When there are challenges, it is never really about the dog at all! It is about how we respond and control ourselves. Most important, it is so beneficial for us to always be in a calm and controlled state because the dogs just pick up on whatever energy we are sending out whether excited, fearful or calm and they respond to that.
