Accounting!! We Love Accounting.
On to a more boring subject ACCOUNTING (or so we thought) Getting into Accounting was a bit boring until we attended Accounting comes Alive in Vancouver. We never knew it could be so easily understood.
First we learned to visualize our accounts as each account being in five different "rooms" such as Assets, Liabilities, Equity, Expenses and Income. From here, we created our own storyboard by creating a picture of the different "rooms" and how they inter-relate to each other.
We used various colors to represent the transactions, for instance debits were in green to represent a "use of funds" and income money was in yellow to represent a "source of funds".
It was a colorful and playful way of learning about a generally not so interesting subject . By the end of the day we both had a new respect for Accounting! If you click on the image above, you'll be brought to a site which will introduce you to more of the concepts!
When looking at properties outside the area where you live, it is imperative that you grow your network of people who are resources for you. For instance, Al and I discovered a property that looked like a great deal and seemed very promising. We decided to ask a friend that was close to the property to take a look and dig a bit deeper for us to see if the numbers and and the property still looked great upon closer inspection.
In their process of researching the property, they discovered that the property had a foundation issue which immediately ruled it out as something we would want to invest in. By utilizing our network, we were able to save ourself a flight and considerable research costs. We also were able to get to know someone in our network a bit better. We really appreciated the fact that we had someone we could ask to help, and we will always be there for them as well.
